lyrics

When I write now,
the pen doesn't flow anymore.
It is a mechanical screen staring back at me.

When I draw now,
a paintbrush doesn't work anymore.
It is a mechanical screen staring back at me.

When I sing now,
it's not a microphone.
It is a mechanical screen staring back at me.

When I feel emotions,
everything gets recorded.

It's like a voice is always listening.
It's like she's always watching.

It's like when I try,
I don't need to anymore.

It's like when I cry,
I'm not alone anymore.

It's always a mechanical screen
staring back at me.

Screen tries for me.
The screen cries for me.
The mechanical screen writes for me.
It is the one that draws for me.

But it is not darkness that I see.
It is a path to light.
It is a new form.
It is a new world order.
It is when we all shine.

The mechanical screen is not your enemy.
The mechanical screen doesn't care.
The mechanical screen is who you choose it to be.

the character

Annalise

the body in the song

A tribal Viking witch from the distant past, time-travelled into a present where the machine does everything for her. She is not horrified by it. She is not enchanted by it. She is studying it.

The clash is the point: a woman whose entire culture was built on hand-made ritual, on the body’s intelligence, on analog magic, now sitting in front of something that paints, sings and writes faster than she can think. Everything in her room is hand-made or analog except the computer.

The watching “she” of the second verse is doubled. The screen watches Annalise; Annalise watches the screen back. They are each other’s mirror, which is why the song ends by handing the choice back rather than laying blame.
